Urusei Yatsura episode 16 Recap And Review

Urusei Yatsura Episode 16 Recap

Urusei Yatsura episode 16 begins with Ataru, Mendo, Shinobu, and Lum going to the beach. They spy two people floundering on the ocean currents.

Ataru and his friends meet the two and take them to their cafe. The man introduces himself and his son Ryunosuke to them and says that one day he will take over the cafe. Ryunosuke’s father explains that their business and the ocean work together. Every summer – the waves of the ocean become violent and cause the family business to lose sales.

Ataru and Mendo think it best to leave and let Ryunosuke and his father deal with the matter themselves. Before Ataru and his friends leave, they overhear Ryunosuke and his father arguing about the family business again. Ryunosuke says he doesn’t want to live as a man and reveals that he is a woman. Ataru and Mendo return to Ryunosuke’s cafe to confirm this information. Ataru tells Luma that he wants to help Ryunosuke. Ataru and Mendo flirt with Ryunosuke and he beats them up. Ryunosuke looks at Lum and Shinobu and says he’s jealous of their girly behavior.

He longs to dress as a woman, but his father wants him to be more masculine so he can run the family business properly. After seeing them arguing over trivial things, Ataru and his friends try to leave again. However, Ryunosuke’s father convinces them to help them in exchange for a free meal. Ryunosuke and his father get into a fist fight and knock each other out. Lum and his friends claim that the first step in helping these two is to prevent them from fighting. Ryunosuke and his father wake up to find themselves chained. Lum said they should try to talk things out instead of using their fists.

Unfortunately, Ryunosuke and his father don’t listen, resulting in the cafe falling apart due to their overwhelming powers. Ataru and his friends stop it and leave the beach. A week passes and we see Ryunosuke and his father enter Tomobiki Town and have a fight. Ataru and Lum spot the couple and greet Ryunosuke’s father. He explains that they are looking for ways to generate cash as they have to rebuild their cafe. They plan to work permanently at Ataru’s school supply store. Ryunosuke will attend classes with Ataru and his friends. Ryunosuke’s father offers him to go to school dressed as a sailor, but he must defeat him in a battle.

He fights his father but loses due to Ataru’s intervention. He wears a boy’s uniform and the girls mistake him for a man. Mendo worries that he already has competition. Mendo, Ataru and two other boys meet and plan to dress Ryunosuke in a sailor uniform. Ataru and the boys meet Ryunosuke’s father, beat him up, and take his sailor uniform. Ryunosuke discusses his livelihood with some female classmates and wishes to wear a sailor uniform like them.

Although he is grateful for their offer, he wants to defeat his father in battle before dressing up. Ran arrives and catches Ryunosuke’s attention. She represents the girls she idolized as a child. When Ran leaves, Ryunosuke asks Lum how he can contact Ran. Ryunosuke sends the letter to Ran, who thinks it’s a love letter. Ran plans to meet Ryunosuke and wonders how he would treat her. Lum tells Ran that Ryunosuke is a girl, angering Ran as Lum tries to make a fool of her. Ran approaches Ryunosuke and says she wants to go out with him, angering Ataru.

At the school gate, Ryunosuke hopes that he will learn to be like Ran and show off his sailor uniform. Ran is coming. Ryunosuke asks her if she’s teaching him everything he needs to know about women. Ran laughs. She still believes that Ryunosuke is a boy and acts perverted towards him. They go to a cafe to eat parfait. Ryunosuke tries to imitate Ra’s posture while eating dessert, but Ataru walks in. Ran Lum notices and they go to the bathroom to discuss things. Ran believes that Lum has feelings for Ryunosuke, but Lum assures her that Ataru wants to spy on Ryunosuke.

Ryunosuke and Ran go on a boat ride, but it gets ruined by Ataru. Later, Ran confronts Lum about her anger. Ryunosuke looks at them from a distance and feels that he has more to learn. The episode concludes with Ryunosuke promising to look like a woman so he can wear a sailor uniform.

  Episode Review

We finally got a one-segment episode. Ryunosuke has a difficult situation with his father, and many fans can resonate with his character. Pretending to be someone you’re not can lead to many distressing events, both mentally and physically.

Ryunosuke’s character captures this issue in a humorous and beautiful way. Ryunosuke’s decision to prove himself worthy of wearing a sailor uniform may sound silly, but I adore his drive and commitment. It will be great to witness how and when Ryunosuke proves his father wrong in future episodes. This will lead to a satisfying victory for Ryunosuke and the audience who relate to his character.

Meanwhile, I can’t help but worry about Urusei Yatsura’s decision to sideline Ataru and Lumun’s relationship development in favor of introducing new characters. It’s been a while since we’ve had an intimate moment between the two, and it would be great to see that shine through in future episodes. Although the comedy of the anime was nice – it doesn’t offer a worthwhile romance.

Overall, this was a fun episode with some great themes. Ryunosuke’s character is interesting and I can’t wait to see more from him. Hopefully future episodes can focus on Ataru and Lum’s romantic arguments and activities.
